Gifting scent in India: the etiquette

Weddings, festivals, colleagues and in-laws each read a bottle differently. Match the gift to the relationship, not just the person.

The bottle in your hand says more than you meant it to

You are at the door, gift bag in hand, about to hand a perfume to your father-in-law for the first time. Every choice you made in the shop (the size, the collection, even the box it arrived in) is about to be read as a statement about how seriously you take this relationship. Nobody warns you that a gift this small carries that much weight. But in India, it does.

Weddings and festivals

A wedding gift can afford to be generous and a little expressive. This is an occasion built for it. A 60ml from La Collezione Epos, in its debossed box, reads as a considered gift rather than an afterthought. For festivals, where you are often giving to more people on a smaller budget each, the Discovery Set or a 20ml does the same job at a gentler price, and nobody expects a festival gift to be your most expensive one.

Colleagues, in-laws, and elders

With colleagues, restraint matters most. A farewell, a work Secret Santa, a thank-you to a mentor. None of these want a statement scent. Reach for the unisex, low-loudness picks: something built for the office, not the party. Overshoot here and the gift reads as either presumptuous or, worse, personal in a way office relationships rarely welcome.

With in-laws and elders, the instinct is to go big to show respect. Resist it. What reads as respect here is thoughtfulness, not volume: a scent suited to their age and habits, presented well, given without ceremony. A collection with real oud in the base, like La Collezione Oud, often lands better with an older recipient than anything overtly modern.

What the price actually signals

A 20ml, from ₹1,379, says "I thought of you." A 60ml, from ₹3,419 to ₹3,659 depending on the perfume, says "this occasion matters." The Discovery Set at ₹1,949 says "I want you to find your own." None of these are the wrong message. The etiquette is matching the message to the relationship, not maximising the price for its own sake. One practical note until Act I: Dusk releases in mid-November 2026: the Epos bottles are on preorder, and the Discovery Set is the one that ships today.

With scent and soul,
